In the article â€Å"What do standardized tests actually test?† (2014) in the name of Marion Brady as quoted by Valerie Strauss, the topic of: are standardized tests accurately testing is discussed. As a whole, Strauss’s article seems to be debating whether the Piagetian or the Vygotskyian approach is the correct way of teaching; do students learn by being taught from a teacher or do they learn from hands on experience and mental readiness!? and how that relates back to whether standardized testing is an accurate representation of that which is being tested. Brady bases his article on a headline in Forbes magazine that was published January 26, 2009, titled: â€Å"Bill Gates: It’s the Teacher, Stupid†. Throughout his article, Brady quotes and address different opinions on how students need to learn such as: the opinion of Bill Gates who believes that one only learns through teaching and a Chinese proverb that claims that one learns (understands) only through involvement. Gates belief seems to be Vygotskyian because through the experience of being taught the students will learn new things and the teaching represents the scaffolding and the exposure that the children need in order to learn something new. On the other hand, the Chinese proverbs seems to be Piagetian because the students learn through getting involved and experiencing new things and Piaget puts an emphasis on using ones senses to learn based on their development. Marvell is also very convincing in the first stage of the poem towards the woman saying how if he had the time he would take two hundred years to adore each breast and thirty thousand for all the rest of her body, but then in the second stage he argues his case that he doesnt have the time and if he did, he would do those things but he cant. The poem itself is divided into three stages where the poet is expressing himself differently in each one. In the first stage he gives an adoring feeling towards the mistress through flattery and how he if he had the time he would adore each part of her body for as long as he could two hundred to adore each breast. In the second stage he gradually becomes impatient, still following the idea that he would love her for eternity but that clearly dont have that sort of time. He also adds the gruesome fact that if she dies a virgin the worms will take her long preserved virginity, then worms shall try that long-preserved virginity. The third stage is a plea from Marvell to his mistress asking her for a chance to get together but while shes still young and youthful, he also gets on to the subject how she should grab the opportunity while they have the chance. The sheer brilliance in this poem to disguise so much unpleasantness into a love poem was Marvells style of being a balanced but argumentative writer, this poem falls perfectly into his writing category. The fulsome flattery employed by Marvell is rejected by Shakespeares Sonnet CXXX. Sonnet CXXX is a classic Shakespeare sonnet and is well renowned for its anti-sonnet feeling. It has all the forms of a traditional sonnet as it has fourteen lines, iambic pentameter and rhyming couplets but works against all sonnets as it is an attack at all poets who tend to put women on a pedestal. Shakespeare who was of course the greatest English writer of all time and in this sonnet he has proved this. Some would presume that this sonnet was addressed to his lover but this would seem a bit strange as it isnt admiring her in a way that her beauty is exaggerated, so she might not have been too impressed with this sonnet. Otherwise this poem would have been addressed to other poets who largely exaggerated the beauty of their lovers to please them. Shakespeare is showing that his lover is not perfect but he still loves her and that is the most important thing to both of them. In this Sonnet Shakespeare proves the brilliance of his writing by describing his lover bleakly and getting away with it which makes him such an admired writer. In love poems skin and breasts would often be described as pure white which would show that the women had perfect skin, however Shakespeare describes her skin and breasts as dun which is a brownish colour. If snow be white, why then her breasts are dun., this bring the reader to reality as this is often the colour of peoples skin in that era. Shakespeare uses such metaphors as If hair be wires, black wires grow on her head, this also gives us a sense of imagery and we can start to imagine what the mistress would look like. The poet William Blake was one who was aware of political and religious oppression and the suffering of the poor although he was quite well off. Blakes metaphors are used wisely and can have different interpretations meaning often a reader would be confused until they had read the poem a few times and reviewed all of the possible meanings. The poem begins with ambiguity often mentioning the word rose which could be a flower of a womans name which could leave the reader confused. The bed of crimson joy could be referring to a sexual encounter as the crimson joy could be referring to a womans sex organs. It is difficult to tell who the poem is addressed to but this could be someone writing down their feelings on an event and releasing their anger through their writing, however it could be an act of revenge from someone to their lover because they may have betrayed them. The rose is a sign of passion and Blake could have deliberately added this to the poem to show that their was passion involved i.e. a sexual encounter. It was often presumed in these times that men would be the ones who would sleep around and women wouldnt, in the present it can be known from both men and women but the difference is that if men sleep around they are often known as studs but if women were to do the same things they would be known as a slag. This can go to show how all things in todays society are still not politically correct and different opinions can be taken up just because you are a different sex. This is a short poem with plenty of metaphysical language such as Thy bed of crimson joy and his dark secret love which gives the poem a lot of depth and feeling. While The Sick Rose may be expressing it anger to the supposed affair that is addressed in it Sonnet CXXX is also showing its anger towards other poets and how that may over exaggerate a womans looks and Shakespeare shows his outrage at this. Sonnet CXXX and To His Coy Mistress have very similar but opposite outlines to them as Shakespeare is showing his mistress how she really is, while Marvell is putting her on a pedestal he seems to be really kind and adoring but we later find out that he only wants her for her body and actually shows himself as an unpleasant character, but Shakespeare gives off the feeling that he is being brutal to his mistress but it turns out that he is being adoring because he shows that shes not perfect but he still loves her. Marvell gives off a sense of reverse psychology in his poem with his gruesome touches such as the example where he describes how the worms would take her long preserved virginity so it is more likely to bring the mistress closer to Marvell, while Sonnet CXXX you would expect the mistress to be upset with Shakespeare after writing it and they might drift apart. To His Coy Mistress have basic structures while they both have rhyming couplets Marvells poem is meant to be read at speed so the reader gets the sense of the poem, but Sonnet CXXX is meant to be read at a slow and relaxed speed as it has an iambic pentameter. All three poems have shown their themes of lust, lust and relationships and have at least one of them featured in the poem. These poems can teach us a lot about love, lust and relationships and how they arent always so popular among certain people, but when they do work out people can be exhilarated and joyful. They also show us that in the time that these poems where written people had different views on love, lust and relationships than we do today and have to respect that they might have had different opinions on them. These poems might not have always been respected at the era they were written, but today the brilliance of writing in these poems have earned them the respect they deserve.

Society has become more advanced in all aspects. Traditional and modern are two different terms used to classify ways of governing society. Even today, traditional societies exist where culture and religion are very important. Yet, societies that have been traditional across the world have managed to keep traditional values and become partially or entirely modern. Looking back in time, individuals have more freedom and rights now than before. Change is important because it encourages new opportunities and our mentality is different than individuals from before the Industrial revolution. Traditional and modern societies have many similarities and differences, and this paper will look at both viewpoints. The most important differences between traditional and modern societies are the social hierarchy, mass consumption, and family structure. This paper will also argue why modernity is more beneficial for society than a traditional viewpoint. The first type of society to be examined is known as the traditional society. Traditional society has very strict division of labour and honour. There are specific roles for both the men and women within the family. According to Bell (2015), "Significant proportion of the population the relation of social position to cultural style-working class, middle class, and upper class- no longer holds" (p. 38). Today in society, no individual of the higher working class can dictate where individuals stand in society. Where as in traditional society, people were born with prescribed roles and had little to no freedom to change their position in the social structure. Campbell states, "Members of the traditional society were also held to be responsible for the action of any other member" (p. 101). Traditional society has a closed belief system, which includes the values of tradition, magic and superstitions. Prestige is very important in traditional society, as it is an indicator of high status within the community. Conlin states, "The family's task is to always enhance their prestige, honour and respect. (Conlin,2015). The second type of society is known as the modern society. Unlike traditional society, where family was the most important aspect, individualism and freedom is the central aspect. Freedom is essential and opposition towards forces which attempt to restrict individual freedom. Modern society values ambition and upward mobility, whereas in traditional society an individual was prescribed a role at birth and through out their life. (Conlin, 2015). Modern society is also concerned with the latest fashion trends and technology. For example, people want newer versions of phones constantly or the latest style of purses. Competition is everywhere in this society, individuals want to have the best of everything, this allows the society to move forward and advance. Where as in traditional society, there was a lot of stagnation and since their roles in society were limited, there wasn't room for creativity or advancement. In modern society self-indulgence is a key trait. People want to buy luxury items and spend money, where as in the traditional society you only made your earnings for the only purpose of surviving. Another difference between modern and traditional societies is the concept of achievement and ambition. In traditional society, ambition is not valued or accepted due to the fact that it is seen as a threat to social order. (Conlin, 2015). Biography of Elijah McCoy, American Inventor Elijah McCoy (May 2, 1844–October 10, 1929) was an African-American inventor who received more than 50 patents for his inventions during his lifetime. His most famous invention was a cup that fed lubricating oil to machine bearings through a small tube. Machinists and engineers who wanted genuine McCoy lubricators might have used the expression the real McCoy- a term meaning the real deal or the genuine article. After becoming certified, he returned to Michigan to pursue a position in his field. However, McCoy- like other African-Americans at the time- faced racial discrimination that prevented him from earning a position appropriate to his level of education. The only job he could find was that of a locomotive fireman and oiler for the Michigan Central Railroad. The fireman on a train was responsible for fueling the steam engine and the ​oiler lubricated the engines moving parts as well as the trains axles and bearings. Because of his training, McCoy was able to identify and solve the problems of engine lubrication and overheating. At that time, trains needed to periodically stop and be lubricated to prevent overheating. McCoy developed a lubricator for steam engines that did not require the train to stop. His automatic lubricator used steam pressure to pump oil wherever it was needed. McCoy received a patent for this invention in 1872, the first of many he would receive for his improvements to steam engine lubricators. These advancements improved transit by allowing trains to travel farther without pausing for maintenance and re-oiling. McCoys device not only improved train systems; versions of the lubricator eventually appeared in oil-drilling and mining equipment and construction and factory tools. According to the patent, it did so by provid[ing] for the continuous flow of oil on the gears and other moving parts of a machine in order to keep it lubricated properly and continuous and thereby do away with the necessity of shutting down the machine periodically. As a result, the lubricator improved efficiency in a variety of fields. In 1868, Elijah McCoy married Ann Elizabeth Stewart, who died four years later. A year later, McCoy married his second wife, Mary Eleanora Delaney. The couple had no children. McCoy continued to improve upon his automatic lubricator design and make designs for new devices. Railroad and shipping lines began using McCoy’s new lubricators and the Michigan Central Railroad promoted him to an instructor in the use of his new inventions. Later, McCoy became a consultant to the railroad industry on patent matters. McCoy also obtained patents for some of his other inventions, including an ironing board and a lawn sprinkler, which he had designed to reduce the work involved in his household tasks. In 1922, McCoy and his wife Mary were in a car accident. Mary later died from her injuries, and McCoy experienced severe health problems for the rest of his life, complicating his professional obligations. The Real McCoy The expression the real McCoy- meaning the real thing (not a fake or inferior copy)- is a popular idiom among English-speakers. Its exact etymology is unknown. Some scholars believe it comes from the Scottish the real McKay, which first appeared in a poem in 1856. Others believe the expression was first used by railroad engineers looking for the real McCoy system, i.e. a lubricator equipped with Elijah McCoys automatic drip cup rather than a poor knockoff. Whatever the true etymology, the expression has been associated with McCoy for some time. In 2006, Andrew Moodie developed a play based on the inventors life called The Real McCoy. Death In 1920, McCoy opened his own company, the Elijah McCoy Manufacturing Company, to produce his products himself rather than licensing his designs to existing companies (many of the products he designed did not feature his name). Unfortunately, McCoy suffered in his later years, enduring a financial, mental, and physical breakdown that landed him in the hospital.
